Bills designed to overhaul voter registration, mail voting, and voter ID have been packaged into "Frankenstein" bills to push them through via conference committee report. The bills that made it through include: HB 2437- Voter Registration restrictions and Voter file removal, which among many other things: allows voters to be removed from the rolls from inactivity; limits on-line voter registration, including the KSVotes website we've been using; and mandates quarterly reporting on non-citizens receiving benefits to the Secretary of State (and therefore is anti-immigrant as well). This passed with 80 votes in the House (4 shy of veto-proof) so we will work to sustain an expected veto. HB 2569- Overhauling Mail Voting takes away people's right to challenge election laws in their own community by forcing them to file in Shawnee County, and could end mail voting for thousands if a court finds the state denied citizens right to due process to fix ballot issues. Passed with 78 votes in the House. HB 2587- Overhauling Voter ID would make state IDs, like driver's licenses, follow stricter rules than REAL ID by requiring documents to prove citizenship, which would be listed on your ID. There is no plan for implementation or cost to the taxpayer. It could also put legal residents who aren't citizens at risk whenever they have to show their ID. This passed with 77 votes in the House.
